A new hotel of elegance and beauty

Hotel Ryumeikan began life in 1899 as an annex of Nakuraya Ryokan, an Edo-period inn located in Nihombashi’s Muromachi neighborhood.
Reopening in August 1, 2014, Ryumeikan preserves the original hotel’s history and atmosphere. Its 9 rooms combine beauty and comfort while blending western and Japanese elements.

A beloved inn with over 100 years of history

Outside the former Ryumeikan

When it was established, the Ryumeikan became well known and admired for its construction, with all rooms facing garden. Thanks to its refined design and construction, the inn hosted prominent visitors from all walks of life. However, the inn’s charm was not limited to the building itself. Uhei Hamada, the inn’s founder was fond of the new western influences finding their way into Japan and devoted a section of the garden to a western style building and restaurant—a rarity for the time. Thus, with its reopening in August, 2014, Ryumeikan Hotel seeks to help guests rediscover the charms of modern Japan. The play of light and shadow in the corridors give a glimpse of the Japanese wabi-sabi aesthetic rarely seen today. Throughout the hotel guests can experience a feeling of Japanese beauty.

Traditional rooms with modern comforts

The names of the guest rooms have remained unchanged since the founding of the hotel. Named after traditional flowers and plants, they convey a feeling of Japanese tranquility and tradition. The rooms are spacious (52㎡~61.9㎡). The beds, handcrafted by Kyoto’s Iwata Brand, a maker with over 180 years of experience, offer a peaceful night’s sleep. Each room has a private bath made of the famous Shigaraki-yaki—earthenware made from one of Japan’s six traditional kilns.

Cuisine from the heart of Tokyo’s tea culture

A selection of tea-based foods

The Ochanomizu neighborhood has long been a center of tea culture in Tokyo. Experience these delicate flavors at Ryumeikan’s new 1899 Ochanomizu restaurant and terrace. Dishes like tofu or buckwheat soba noodles made from powdered matcha tea as well as seafood and meats cooked using green tea oil delight the eyes and the palate. During the afternoon cafe time, diners can choose from a selection of matcha tea-sweets, while at dinner the restaurant offers a selection of traditional Japanese meals like matcha tea-dishes. Taking its name from the year Ryumeikan was established, 1899 Ochanomizu endeavors to deepen its local roots and ties to the local cuisine.
