Events and Experiences of Traditional Culture in Nihombashi, Tinted Sakura Pink

Nihombashi—the starting point of Japan

Nihombashi flourished as the center of premodern Tokyo when the bridge of the same name was designated the starting point of the Five Routes connecting the capital of Edo with the rest of Japan. The area today retains the vestiges and traditions of the nostalgic Edo period (1603–1868) while it continues to evolve. Less than a 10-minute walk from Tokyo Station leads to prestigious stores and restaurants that uphold authentic craftsmanship and cuisine, as well as complexes that attract new generations of crowds. From sightseeing and shopping to dining and a taste of culture, Nihombashi offers the experience of old and new Tokyo.

Familiar things that started in Nihombashi

Post offices, banks, fish markets, kabuki, rickshaws, hayashi rice (hashed beef rice), and oyako-don (chicken and egg over rice)—all of these things we take for granted today have their beginnings in Nihombashi. The area is the birthplace of cultures passed down for generations.
