The weeks leading up to Christmas envelop Tokyo in romantic illuminations at night. Only in this metropolis can anyone enjoy the great scale and beauty of dazzling giant trees and creative light art. Between New Year’s Eve and the first few days of the New Year, shrines and temples across Japan attract large crowds. The various stalls that line the grounds during this time welcome visitors to pick up a bite to munch as they wait their turn to pray. For the Setsubun festival in February, a number of shrines and temples invite celebrities to lead their bean-tossing event, drawing masses of people to pray for health.
