Shinagawa Yakiimo Terrace 2018

Shinagawa Yakiimo Terrace 2018, held from January 30 to February 5, presents a lineup of yakiimo, or roasted sweet potato, selected from popular vendors in 14 regions across Japan. Categories include “juicy,” featuring rich potato juices, “fluffy,” with a classic sweetness, and “futuristic,” made with rare varieties of sweet potato. A popular attraction from last year that makes a comeback is the outdoor kotatsu, or low table with a heater underneath and covered with a futon blanket. New this year are a foot bath and hand bath using water shipped directly from Ehime Prefecture’s Dogo Onsen, reputed to be the oldest hot spring in Japan, and Saga Prefecture’s Ureshino Onsen, known as one of three great hot springs that make the skin silky and smooth. Warm up in celebrated hot springs, stay warm in a cozy kotatsu, and take a bite of freshly roasted hot yakiimo—this is the ultimate experience of winter in Japan.
